Raiders riding high, ready for Buford

   Habersham Central is riding momentum from a big win into Friday night’s game against Buford, a longtime Georgia powerhouse who is in the Raiders’ region for the first time.    “They are a good football team every year,” Raiders coach Benji Harrison said.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS: Lakey undergoing radiation in cancer battle

   Just as Gladys Lakey was having to get accustomed to COVID-19 like the rest of us, she receives a diagnosis that no one ever wants to hear – breast cancer.     Lakey said she was in total denial at first, but she was fortunate to find the masses at stage 1 on both sides in May.

   A COVID-19 outbreak at city hall last week lead to among other things, a cancellation of the Oct. 6 meeting and delayed some timely agenda items.

Rumble strips improve safety on county roads

   While traveling throughout Habersham County, many drivers have inevitably noticed new rumble strips along the centerline and edge of several rural roads.

ELECTION 2020: Adams, Stamey compete for only contested county seat left

   Habersham County’s commission seat for District 5 opened up late in 2019, and Tim Stamey was picked in a special election to fill the final year of the expiring term.    Stamey is now running for his first four-year term against Democratic challenger Mike Adams.

More than 5,000 votes already cast in Habersham County

   Early voting in Habersham County began Tuesday, and combined with mail-in/absentee voting, thousands of votes already have been cast.    Folks were lined up early each morning this week to be among the first to cast their ballots in this historic election.

Habersham County picking up the pieces from record flood event

   Habersham County has been saving money during good economic times just in case of a rainy day.    Those funds came in handy for the county’s rainiest day ever, as local officials are still trying to repair all the water damage caused by an offshoot of Hurricane Delta over the weekend.

Habersham County Schools Fall Break extended through Oct. 16

Habersham County Schools has announced the extension of Fall Break due to damaged roads affecting bus routes from this past weekend's heavy rainfall caused by Hurricane Delta. Schools will begin on Monday, Oct. 19 according to Superintendent Matthew Cooper.
