Heroes in Irvin Street fire identified

The Cornelia Fire Department has identified the individuals who helped 13 residents (five families) escape a house fire Aug. 30 in downtown Cornelia. Timing was a life-saving factor during the fire, which destroyed a Cornelia home that Friday morning.

Cornelia officials, community leave mark on new municipal complex

City officials, representatives and members of the community attended a topping-out ceremony for Cornelia’s new downtown municipal complex Friday morning, Sept. 6.

Habersham man stabbed to death in Forsyth

Authorities have identified the victim of a deadly Forsyth County stabbing as a Habersham County man. Cpl. Doug Rainwater, public information officer with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO), told The Northeast Georgian Tuesday the victim was identified as 20-year-old Jesus Gilberto Arizaga.

Demorest residents request mayor’s resignation

The Demorest City Council and Mayor Rick Austin heard an unusual request at its regular meeting Tuesday.

Dorian’s wrath continues north, local personnel sent to assist

While Hurricane Dorian remained unpredictable earlier this week, the storm was producing tornadoes and causing flooding in the Carolinas as of The Northeast Georgian’s press deadline Thursday, sources stated.

BRUNCH BILL

Cornelia residents will soon decide whether local dining establishments, including motels/hotels, can serve alcohol earlier Sunday mornings. At its regular meeting Tuesday, the Cornelia City Commission voted to place a “Brunch Bill” referendum on the coming Nov. 5 municipal election ballot.

Fire displaces 13, unknown citizens come to the rescue

A fire early Friday morning at a multi-family apartment complex near downtown Cornelia displaced over a dozen people, but caused no injuries.
