On Tuesday, Volunteers for Literacy kicked off this year’s One Book Habersham with Malcolm Mitchell and his book, The Magician’s Hat.One Book Habersham was already a magical aspect of the work Volunteers for Literacy does as it brings the entire community together in reading the same book.

Thumbs up, thumbs down

   Thumbs up – Living in the Bible Belt and being surrounded by fellow Christians is the biggest benefit to calling Habersham County home. This is Holy Week and Sunday churches across our community and beyond will celebrate the resurrection of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Twenty-five years later, we remember her warm smile

   She was beautiful. She had a round face, big blue eyes and a warm, easy smile.   Her name was Bonelle Stevens. She had moved into a little house on the other side of the railroad tracks, across from the Baptist church.   He was tall, raw-boned and clean-cut.

Protecting our children

   On the front of today’s edition and each edition this month, you’ll find blue pinwheels on display. You may have also noticed blue pinwheels planted on lawns in our community.   April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and the pinwheel is a symbol of prevention.

Counting pennies

   When I was in middle school, we were introduced to foreign languages in an interesting way.   In fifth grade, we spent a quarter of the year learning French, then another quarter learning Spanish.    In sixth grade, we got to choose which of those two languages we wanted to take for a semester.

Praying and votingTo the editor:   As an average American citizen, the only way I can react to Democrats in Congress, Democrat prosecutors and Democrat judges who protect, encourage and enable criminals and illegal immigrants, is to pray and vote.
