Mail fiasco causing county, Congress plenty of headaches

   Many of Habersham County’s recreation baseball players were without uniforms for the first week of games before spring break.    The shirts were ordered and produced, but they were sitting in the U.S. Postal Service’s new processing center in Palmetto that is causing so much angst across Georgia.

Proposed sales tax bill gets LOST in space

   Habersham County leaders have been looking for a way to get a Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) back on the books for the county, and Rep. Victor Anderson (R-Cornelia) crafted a bill in January to do just that.

Another lawsuit filed for prison atrocities

   A former prisoner at Lee Arrendale State Prison filed a lawsuit on Feb. 20 alleging former corrections officer Cameron Cheeks raped her while she was a prisoner at the facility in late 2022.

UGA X RECALLED FONDLY

University of Georgia Athletics announced that Uga X, fondly known as Que, died peacefully in his sleep earlier Tuesday morning. Born May 27, 2013, he formally began his tenure in a collaring ceremony at the Georgia-Georgia Southern football game on Nov. 21, 2015.

Assembly kicks off new session Monday

   A new session of Georgia’s General Assembly begins Monday in Atlanta, and being the start of Year 2 of a cycle, plenty of bills will already be in play as legislators return to the dome.    “It will start a lot quicker,” Sen. Bo Hatchett said.

Duck season opens Nov. 18 in Georgia

   Waterfowl hunters are ready to head to their favorite wetland location for the Georgia duck hunting season when it opens on Sat., Nov. 18, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division (WRD).
