Piedmont swim teams thrive with community’s support

   Piedmont University’s men’s and women’s swim teams both claimed Independent South Swimming Conference championships earlier this month in Kingsport, Tenn.    The double titles mark an amazing feat for a program just four years into its existence.

   Peyton Irvin means business. It’s just the way the Cornelia native and Habersham Central alum is wired. Always has been. Whether it be in the classroom or on the diamond, Irvin’s calm demeanor and level-headed approach have served him well thus far at Piedmont University.

   Habersham Central’s girls basketball team has reached the Sweet 16 in two of the last four years, but even though the Lady Raiders missed that mark this year, that did not diminish what Coach Bill Bradley called a “great” season.

   A promising Raider Hoops season came to a screeching halt Wednesday night as Habersham fell to Langston Hughes, 52-45, in the first round of the GHSA State Tournament.    The loss spells the end of one of Hab Central’s best basketball seasons on record.

   Against all odds, the Habersham Central girls basketball squad worked its way through the 8-6A tournament ladder to secure a region runner-up finish. Doing so gave the Lady Raiders the right to host a GHSA State Tournament game in Mt. Airy this week.

Piedmont gets off to rough start

   Piedmont University’s baseball team dropped its first three games during its opening weekend of the 2024 season. Piedmont lost 5-2 to Chapman on Friday evening in the opener. The Panthers recorded 11 hits to Piedmont’s four in the game while both teams committed one error.
