COVID-19 spikes nationally, stays stable in Habersham County

   As news of tests on a potential COVID-19 vaccine hit the news this week, it also was reported that the United States had a record 128,000 new positive cases on Saturday.    Habersham County has held steady though, and seen its positive cases slowly decline in recent weeks.

Moore leaves Demorest City Council

   Sean Moore officially served his last meeting on the Demorest City Council on Tuesday, just as his successor was being elected.    Moore, a Demorest native, left the council because he has moved to Cornelia and can no longer be eligible to serve.

Baldwin eyes virtual tree-lighting because of COVID-19

   Christmastime in Baldwin is scheduled to look different this year, as city officials finalized plans for having a virtual Christmas tree lighting to kick off the 2020 holiday season.     The lighting is scheduled for Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m.

Cornelia Commission approves rezoning for new developments

   Discussion at Tuesday’s Cornelia City Commission Meeting centered around potential new housing in the city that has seen tremendous growth in the past year, including new single family homes, town homes and a set of duplexes.    The commission heard requests from J.G.

Habersham County's SPLOST tax passes in a landslide

   The voters of Habersham County spoke loudly Tuesday when they decided to extend the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax for another six years.    The penny sales tax that goes mostly to public safety and road and bridge repairs passed with 76% of the vote on the up-or-down referendum.

   After 74 years in Cornelia, Habersham Hardware is leaving the city, but it is not straying far from home.    Habersham Hardware of Cornelia will soon consolidate two stores to its Clarkesville location.

   With the brisk chill of fall in the air, many Baldwin residents came out to the farmers market for a night of trunk-or-treating, good food and community fellowship at the city’s fall festival Wednesday night.

Anderson, Hatchett roll into state legislature

   In the least suspenseful elections of the week, Habersham County residents Bo Hatchett and Victor Anderson easily took their places as first-time legislators.    Hatchett won the highly-coveted District 50 Senate seat with 83.2% (71,623 votes) to Dee Daley’s 16.8% (14,484).

County, Clarkesville look to partner on KIA Memorial upkeep

   After much deliberation, Habersham County and the city of Clarkesville are working on an inter-governmental agreement for the upkeep of the Killed In Action War Memorial on the city square.
