Recycling projects leads to sleeping mats for homeless

It was a special moment for Janet Green, a fifth-grade teacher at Baldwin Elementary School, when she found a way to involve her students with a project for her master's program and give back to the homeless community in Habersham County by making sleeping mats out of plastic bags.

A fugitive crashed and burned on his motorcycle Monday afternoon after running from Habersham County Sheriff’s deputies on Highway 365. Joshua Tate, 36, of Gainesville took off northbound as a sheriff’s cruiser pursued, and he tried to make a U-turn and head back south, Sheriff Joey Terrell said.

Shootings cause chaos on local highways

A medical helicopter landed in the middle of Highway 17 on Tuesday morning to assist emergency personnel in helping a patient who attempted suicide. The patient was rushed from a local refuge ministry compound that is located in both Habersham and Stephens counties.
