‘Heartbeat of Habersham’

   Amongst the more than 7,000 students in the Habersham County School System, each one continues to face unique challenges in their mental health and family and social lives while others are still grappling with the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lehman joins council

   The City of Baldwin has a full council once again after Nancy Lehman was sworn into the post two seat at Tuesday night’s meeting.    Lehman gained 55.24 percent of the vote during last week’s special election, defeating her opponent Mark Mullinax who garnered 44.76 percent of the vote.

Demorest lifts moratorium

   The City of Demorest approved a new extensive land use ordinance after 16 months of debating and changing the language. A moratorium, which lasted throughout the 16 months of discussion and prevented new construction, was also lifted today.    The approval took two separate motions.

Mt. Airy celebrates 150th anniversary on Saturday

    The Town of Mt. Airy is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, and its community festivities will be just as significant.    The railroad town was established in 1874 by Col. M.C. Wilcox and served as the highest point between New York and New Orleans at 1,545 feet.

Hapkido for a cause

   Bobby Popham can count his first women’s self-defense class of 2024 a success.    Popham of the Georgia Hapkido Academy, along with fellow instructors Dale Cash, Lorelei Corsino, and William McCoy, hosted the class on Saturday to a room of 17 female participants from a wide range of ages.

North Habersham students honor veterans

   Students, teachers and spectators proudly waved American flags in the air on Monday during North Habersham Middle School’s (NHMS) Veterans Day program, honoring more than 60 local veterans.

Board approves school upgrades

   Renovations are coming to Hazel Grove and Woodville Elementary Schools.    The Habersham County Board of Education approved projects costing more than $7 million Monday night.

Election breakdown

   It’s been one week since Former President Donald Trump claimed his seat back in the White House, and Habersham County voters turned out for the president-elect in record numbers.    In Habersham, 82 percent of voters cast their ballots for Trump, more than the 81.
