Habersham Central Band of Blue wins big again

   The Habersham Central Band of Blue received a grand championship win at the Golden River Marching Festival at Haralson County High School on Oct. 19 – marking a major feat for the band that won its first grand championship since the 1990s last year at the Berkmar High School Invitational.

Animal shelter project remains on hold

   The construction of a new county animal shelter has been delayed once again following discussion at the Habersham County Board of Commissioners work session and meeting on Oct. 21.

Board OKs new safety measure

   A new layer of safety is coming to Habersham County Schools.    The Habersham County Board of Education approved the contract agreement with Centegix for its safety platform equipment and software at the board’s meeting Monday night.

Pop’s prepares hunters, outdoorsmen

   Pop’s Outdoors is prepping hunters to have the best success in the woods.    The nearly 10-year-old store located in Demorest was the brainchild of brothers Greg and Dale Hope.

County manager search narrows

   Habersham County is seeking its new county manager following last month’s announcement that the current jobholder, Alicia Vaughn, will step down at the end of the year.    The job posting was made on the Habersham County website around mid-September, and the application window closed on Oct. 14.

Alert system considered for county schools

   The Habersham County School System could soon see the implementation of Centegix, a wearable alert system that allows staff at schools to notify authorities and lock the school down during urgent situations like medical emergencies or school threats.

New turf coming to Raider Stadium

   A $621,440 project to replace the artificial turf – which school officials say is deteriorating – at Raider Stadium is expected to be approved by the Habersham County Board of Education on Oct. 21.

DAR grave site cleanup

   Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Tomochichi chapter cleaned the grave sites of the relatives of late President Thomas Jefferson on Saturday.    “Today is about cleaning up the graves of the Eppes family,” said Lynn McCollum during the cleanup.

Former SRO arrested

   A former Habersham County school resource officer (SRO) was arrested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) on Oct. 9.    David Matthew Jackels, 47, of Cornelia was charged with violation of oath of office by a public officer and false statements.
