Demorest budget vexes city council

A proposed Fiscal Year 2023 budget for the city of Demorest is presently unbalanced and city council plans future meetings to discuss both more budget cuts, as well as means of increasing city revenue. One solution placed on the table is taking a serious look at a 1 mill property tax increase.

4-H Week celebrated year-long in Habersham

The University of Georgia is celebrating National 4-H week through Oct. 8 but here in Habersham County, the celebrations are not limited to just one week, said Renee Smagur, Habersham County 4-H Program Assistant.

Cornelia eyes holding millage rate steady

The city of Cornelia held its first public hearing last night in concern about the proposition to maintain the millage rate at its current standing of 8.5, which will reflect an increase in property taxes by 5.46 percent. No community members spoke out in favor or against the proposition.

Local woman living her dream on film

Many people dream of working in movies and television, but not everyone is able to realize those dreams. Through a combination of talent, hard work and determination, Isabelle Almoyan of Clarkesville is living her dream as an actress in film and television.

Residents spar over looming T-SPLOST

Based on the back-and-forth at Monday’s town hall, it is probably a good thing that the Roads & Bridges Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) will be decided by the voters.

Shelter animals ‘blessed’ for a better future

The Habersham County Animal Shelter welcomed St. Thomas the Apostle Anglican Church’s new priest, Father Damien Trudeau, on Tuesday to give the animals a little bit of an extra leg up through his blessing.
