Summer begins with questions about next school year

   Today is the last day of the 2019-20 school year that was unlike any other in history.     After running the learning-from-home program for the last two-plus months, faculty and staff members are already preparing for multiple scenarios for how to start the 2020-21 school year.

County candidates finally meet face to face

   For the most part, candidates at Tuesday’s first Farm Bureau political forum did not address one another, just issues.    But just before the end of the segment for probate judge candidates, Cindy Freeman made her feelings known about recent actions by her opponent, incumbent Judge Pam Wooley.

ELECTION 2020: GOP candidates for District 50 Senate seat answer questions

   There are six candidates in the June 9 Republican Primary competing for the right to represent Georgia’s 50th Senate District. That seat is being vacated by John Wilkinson, who is running for U.S. Congress.    The winner of the Republican primary – possibly requiring a runoff election Aug.

VFW ceremony will go on as scheduled Monday

   Grant-Reeves Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7720 will host a short Memorial Day service at the VFW Memorial Park located at 1492 Smith Loop Road in Demorest at 9 a.m. Monday, May 25.     There will be a wreath laying ceremony and guest speaker Post Commander Bill Miles.

Demorest councilmen paying for outside attorneys

   Demorest Councilmen Nathan Davis and John Hendrix are each paying their respective dues in regard to acquiring legal counsel outside of the city.     Hendrix has already paid $1,458.

   The crisis of COVID-19 has reached every corner of our community, state, nation and world. In an effort to reach all of Habersham County with important local news The Northeast Georgian published and distributed an EXTRA edition in Spanish Friday, May 15.

Commissioners level out budget without tax hike

   Even though they know the budget will not accomplish many of their goals, the Habersham County Board of Commissioners declined Monday to make additions to the 2020-21 budget that would create an increase in the property tax rate.
