ELECTION 2020: District 1 county commission candidates answer questions

   With Habersham County Chairman Stacy Hall vacating his seat at the end of this term to run for the Georgia Senate, there will be a new commissioner in District 1 for the next four years.    There are three candidates vying for that position – Jeffery Lunsford, Benny Pate and Bruce Palmer.

Mountain Laurel Festival pushed back to September

   For the first time since 1962, the City of Clarkesville postponed the annual Mountain Laurel Festival until Sept. 12 due to concerns over COVID-19.

Demorest officials try to get on the same page

   As the Demorest City Council prepared to meet Tuesday night, more polarizing issues came to light Friday as the more than three-week controversy that began with the firing of former Police Chief Robin Krockum expanded.

Signs, drawings honor Habersham's medical heroes

   There are a lot of heroes in the current COVID-19 pandemic. Among the most important are workers in the medical field, those who are on the “front lines,” providing healthcare and putting themselves at risk of exposure to the virus.

Demorest makes latest attempt to meet Tuesday night

   UPDATE (5:37 p.m. Wednesday): On Wednesday afternoon, Simonds said she declined Austin’s request.     “I decline your request that I resign as City Manager. It really is my hope that we can move forward and get the real work of the City accomplished,” Simonds said.

Demorest city manager calls for attorney to resign

   As the firing and appointments of police chiefs paired with a recently cancelled meeting with the City of Demorest continues to unfold, City Manager Kim Simonds has requested the voluntary resignation of City Attorney Joey Homans.    Simonds sent a letter to Homans on Thursday.
