County commission runoff results Tuesday night

   Ty Akins unofficially defeated Jason E. Hogan to become the District 5 county commissioner Tuesday night in a runoff.    With just 4.65% of voters participating, Akins had 836 votes to 480 for Hogan.

Farm Bureau’s best earn their due honors

During National Farm City Week, the Habersham County Farm Bureau held an event recognizing farmers at North Georgia Technical College Friday, with nearly 100 local leaders and members of the community in attendance showing their support for local agriculture.

Free Thanksgiving meal offered in Cornelia on Thursday

A free Thanksgiving meal will be served at the Cornelia Community House from 11:30 a.m. to around 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Cornelia Fire Chief Billy Jenkins has helped organize the dinner for five straight years, including during the COVID-19 spike last year.

The winner will be eligible for a $10 McDonald’s gift card and will be recognized in the Dec. 3 edition of The Northeast Georgian. The deadline to submit your picture is Monday, Nov. 29. There will be winners selected from three age groups, 3-5 years old, 6-9 years old and 10-12 years old.

Morris comes full circle, says goodbye

Gary Morris studied at the old Mt. Airy schoolhouse for almost two years as a child. Later, as a councilman and mayor of the town, he fought to keep it from being torn down.

Vaughn’s deal extended

Interim County Manager Alicia Vaughn’s contract was extended Thursday night – more or less. Vaughn’s current contract runs through Jan. 12, but the Board of Commissioners expressed concern that their permanent choice for the position would not be ready by then.
