Community helps lift breast cancer survivor up during months of treatment

   Several years ago, Becky Griffin of Demorest knew a young, healthy, vibrant woman who was shockingly diagnosed with breast cancer. Just 10 months later, her friend died.    “That freaked me out, so I started getting checked,” Griffin said.

Habersham County woman killed in house fire

   An intense house fire in the south end of Habersham County on Monday led to the death of 64-year old Cynthia Clayton and a total loss of the home.    Clayton’s body was discovered Monday afternoon and confirmed by the Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King.

   Just as Gladys Lakey was having to get accustomed to COVID-19 like the rest of us, she receives a diagnosis that no one ever wants to hear – breast cancer.     Lakey said she was in total denial at first, but she was fortunate to find the masses at stage 1 on both sides in May.

Rumble strips improve safety on county roads

   While traveling throughout Habersham County, many drivers have inevitably noticed new rumble strips along the centerline and edge of several rural roads.

ELECTION 2020: Adams, Stamey compete for only contested county seat left

   Habersham County’s commission seat for District 5 opened up late in 2019, and Tim Stamey was picked in a special election to fill the final year of the expiring term.    Stamey is now running for his first four-year term against Democratic challenger Mike Adams.
