Newspapers more important than ever

This is National Newspaper Week, a time to remember the importance of journalism and how it is a foundation of our democracy. We talk a lot about the First Amendment, and it is important to note that freedom of the press was included in the first installment of the Bill of Rights.

To claim or disclaim To the editor: In earlier letters, I have mentioned disclaimers in TV commercials. I am stunned how many people have no idea what they are. Disclaimers are that pesky wording on a commercial detailing possible negative aspects of a commercials service or product.

This year, Oct. 4-10 is National 4-H Week. Did you know 4-H, our nation’s biggest youth leadership organization, began in Covington, Georgia, 116 years ago? Or, that there are more than 240,000 active 4-H participants in Georgia?

Habersham County commissioners were in a no-win situation last week, and after two long meetings, they decided all the options regarding the proposed new development in Baldwin were unacceptable.

Majority of officers are honorable To the editor: Two weeks ago I was driving on Georgia Highway 985 North when I was pulled over by the Georgia State Patrol. The officer approached my car and told me that he had pulled me over for not wearing a seat belt.

The Nov. 3 general election is quickly approaching. Though we have had a less than acceptable turnout for the past two local elections, during a presidential election Habersham has a great history of turning out in large numbers.

Something fishy going on in Baldwin To the editor: Why is Baldwin being picked on? Earlier this year, Habersham County rejected the annexation of land to Baldwin which would have allowed 736 housing units being brought into the Baldwin City limits.

Let’s move forward in Demorest

Demorest has seen two factions in town working to affect changes in city government for months now, but neither has made any progress. One group has been seeking the recall of Councilmen Nathan Davis and John Hendrix, while the other wants to Mayor Rick Austin out of office.
