An hour later, we ask ‘Haven’t we seen this movie before?’

No doubt you’ve heard the old joke that memory is the first thing to go, and I don’t remember the second thing.    There’s much truth in that saying. I know that because my wife and I have reached the age when memory comes and goes, and when it goes, it stays out late, like the town drunk.

What they fought for

On June 6, 1944, American soldiers led a brave fighting force that saved the world.    Let that sink in for a minute. We can talk about bravery and valor and never forgetting. But these men saved the world.

Find the real America again   To the editor:    On June 4, a red line was crossed when USMC Maj. Scott Ritter (ret.) was blocked for travel at New York JFK Airport, and his passport confiscated by agents of the State Department. No warrant was presented and no charges levied.

Tow trucks and dump trucks … grrrr, Mondays

Sitting in a tow truck, staring out the window and wondering how I got there was how my Monday ended.    I guess I knew how I got there. My car broke down on the highway in Rabun County. Why remains to be seen at press time, but it was not even the first time that day when my car faced danger.

Proud to be in Habersham County

Hello Habersham County, I am excited to be here. In time, I look forward to meeting you all in person.    I am Keith Barlow and my wife is Paige from Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Paige is retiring this year after teaching art to middle and high school students for 30 plus years.

We must do better

Another primary has come and gone in Habersham County. Perhaps some folks did not even realize it.    Of the 29,668 registered voters in Habersham County, 6,319 voted for a turnout of 21.3 percent.    On Election Day May 21, only 9.31 percent of our registered voters went out to the polls.

Every day is Something Day

Happy belated National Brisket Day to you and yours. Yesterday was the big day, and although I did not partake in any celebrations, it’s a cause that’s near and dear to my heart given that I know my way around a good brisket.    Not a fan? No worries. Yesterday was also National Hamburger Day.
