Big Brother is watching you To the editor:    The famous phrase from George Orwell’s novel “1984” is coming true, right here in the northeast Georgia counties. How? Through the Flock license plate readers that are cropping up in Hall, White, and Habersham counties.

Big Brother has been watching for 40 years

   It all began with tow trucks.    No wait, we have to go back even further than that.    It began with the Cracker Barrel, but not the one we are used to here. Instead of rocking chairs for checkers, my 6 ½ year-old memory has it as a fancier joint with nighttime lighting and a little ambience.

Qualifying week is here

   We have arrived at the most important election of the year in Habersham County.    No, not the presidential primary. That has already been determined thanks to a flawed system. We are referring to the county and state primary elections coming on May 21.

Too easily pleased

   I’ve never been one to lose myself in a book. I have certainly read books and, though less frequently, still do. Yet the urge to curl up with a thick stack of pages continues to elude me.    I’m not proud of it, by the way. Nearly every “successful” person reads books and does so regularly.

Doc Johnson wasn’t one to sit and take up space on Earth

   Doc Johnson croaked the other day.    I am not being disrespectful. That’s what Doc wanted in his obituary: He croaked.    Yes, that’s an unusual request, but Doc Johnson was an unusual guy. He was who he was.

Read between the lines

   There has been much debate across America in recent years about literature and what books are appropriate for whom. Georgia’s General Assembly is potentially entering the fray when it comes to the right to ban books from libraries.

Support for future LOST To the editor:    I want to weigh in on an issue of importance to our local citizens and one which is being considered in the state legislature now – the issue is that of a local option sales tax. This issue is dear to me.

Assembly’s silence is deafening

   Listen.    Can you hear it?    What?    Two things in Atlanta.    Clink, clink, clink and tick, tick, tick.    Cocktail glasses of Georgia Power, Twin Pines Minerals LLC and their lobbyists are clinking so loudly that you don’t have to be in Atlanta to hear the unmistakable sounds.

United we stand / Support the Raiders

United we stand We applaud the efforts of the Habersham County United Way, which has paved the way for so many community organizations to serve our citizens in a variety of ways. Folks have seen the thermometers out in the community again this year for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.
