Appreciate those who defend us

Who has your back? Who is always there in a time of need? Who takes care of your loved ones and you when seconds are vital in a life-or-death situation? Who allows you to turn off your guard and get a good night’s sleep? Who is always on call?    Our first responders.

Local matters, now more than ever

Habersham County is a place where people look you in the eyes, ask how you’re doing and really mean it. Our home is a geographically blessed community nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.

Fourth Estate for a reason

There has been a lot of talk lately about the Constitution and how it applies to many issues we face today, almost 2 ½ centuries after it was written. The Bill of Rights has been stretched and pushed and kicked, but it still makes up the foundation of our American way of life today.

Let’s enjoy the TV content we have

The world of television is changing, and there is streaming content coming from everywhere. For everyone “cutting the cord” on cable and satellite, there is someone who orders every known streaming service and is ultimately paying practically the same as they were.

Speak to your grandkids about drugs, fentanyl

Fentanyl remains a significant threat across the state. Illegally made fentanyl is available on the drug market in different forms, such as white powder. The powder fentanyl resembles other drugs and is commonly mixed with cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine.

Give no quarter

There is nothing like Friday Night Lights in the South. Tonight, our varsity Raider football team will line up on the gridiron to face off against the Stephens County Indians. Everyone knows, this is a legendary battle.

Listening for common sense

It is a 37-year-old document. And for the last 164 months, I have kept it within arm’s reach on my desk. It is a copy of the speech Dr. J.W. Fanning gave to Leadership Georgia when he was named Advisor-Emeritus in 1986. It’s titled Ten Pillars of Leadership.

Tonight’s the night

When the Raiders line up against Stephens County this evening, there will be no playoff implications on the line. Nor will the game affect Habersham’s ultimate goal of competing in the Region 8-6A standings. Yet, depending on who you ask, tonight’s game might just transcend all of that. I did ask.

Are trans people truly fine? To the editor: As a member of the larger Christian/Traditional community here in Habersham, I would like to speak to the article “Trans people are fine, actually” published on Aug. 2, 2023.
