No one said peace was easy

I have learned a lot of things over the last two-plus months since my father passed away. It is uncharted waters for anyone who loses a parent for the first time, but one of the biggest things I have learned does not necessarily have to do with me.

The 4th of July looks a bit different these days in my family. For over two decades, my dad’s side of the family – 10 of us – would gather at the beach. Each year, we’d repeat the same traditions with a remarkable degree of accuracy.

Demorest on the rise

Nothing brings Americans together like the Fourth of July. We gather friends and family together, eat and drink together, we attend festivals together and we share a fellowship that goes beyond age, socioeconomic status, religion, color, creed, pronoun or other factor used to divide us.

Looking out my window is getting less efficient

We all have weather apps now that change forecasts seemingly by the minute. Just like when we used to have to use “paper maps” to get around in a place we weren’t familiar with, I don’t know what we did with ourselves before we could check weather on a phone.

Dead week? Things are about to pick up

With this week being a GHSA “Dead Week” no organized activities for Habersham Central athletics took place. This year, it represents the calm before the storm. In mere weeks, school will be in session and the HCHS campus will be fluttering. Volleyball tips things off on Aug. 3.

Demorest on the rise

You have to give it to Demorest for being the comeback city of the last couple of years. After a number of years marked by internal struggles and questionable decision-making, the city has bounced back recently, seeking to fashion a more positive legacy.

Time to look at Biden, too

To the editor: I am writing in response to Fritz Crytzer’s Trumpublicans letter. You say Trump is going to be found guilty by the DOJ, for having classified documents? What about all of you idiot loving Biden fans? He had classified documents in his office, his car, his home, etc.

Celebrate safely on the Fourth

Fun, fellowship and fireworks are on tap for this week as America celebrates the Fourth of July for the 247th time on Tuesday. Enjoying hamburgers and hot dogs with loved ones and watching fireworks – or setting off your own – are as American as it gets.

We asked last week for more discussion of the budget by the Habersham County Board of Commissioners, and we certainly got just that Monday night. The only problem is the discussion was crammed into a three-hour microwave meeting when it should have been started sooner.
