Listening for common sense

It is a 37-year-old document. And for the last 164 months, I have kept it within arm’s reach on my desk. It is a copy of the speech Dr. J.W. Fanning gave to Leadership Georgia when he was named Advisor-Emeritus in 1986. It’s titled Ten Pillars of Leadership.

Tonight’s the night

When the Raiders line up against Stephens County this evening, there will be no playoff implications on the line. Nor will the game affect Habersham’s ultimate goal of competing in the Region 8-6A standings. Yet, depending on who you ask, tonight’s game might just transcend all of that. I did ask.

Not so colorful art To the editor: I read with dismay that the Cornelia City Council is considering bringing in artists to create their “mural,” art on our local buildings and walls. I cannot recommend more highly that they not start down this road with this idea.

Collaboration wins the day

It has taken a decade, but all parties are finally seeing eye to eye on the old courthouse project. Everyone seems to finally agree that tearing it down maximizes the value of the property, both from a financial standpoint and for economic development of Clarkesville’s downtown square.

One plate was all the wings we could eat

You never know what kids will get interested in out of nowhere. That’s one thing I have learned in almost 20 years of parenting. Of course, they sometimes lose interest just as quickly, or over an interval of time which is impossible to predict.

No comparable to the human race To the editor: I never tire of studying the activities of the human race. Just when I think  I can no longer be surprised, my species always comes through with an incredible, many times almost unbelievable, event.

Money well spent

The most mentioned topic around budget time in Habersham County is the Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) which, in Habersham County, goes to the school system. That provision was voted in by the residents of the county four decades ago through a grassroots effort led by Sen. John Foster.

UFO question raises its ugly, unknown head once again

Uncle Sam is trying to decide if he believes in UFOs – Unidentified Flying Objects. They’re even talking about them in Congress, where some of its members are sounding more and more like aliens as each year passes. All I know about UFOs I learned as a reporter for newspapers in north Georgia.
