So much to be thankful for

Thanksgiving is our national day to be thankful, and I am thankful for so many things. For my family and friends, of course, and the love and support they’ve given me through difficult times. But there are many little, day-to-day things I appreciate. Here are a few: • Modern dentistry.

Thankful for our community’s heart

This week is a time to stop for a few moments, take a breath and realize what we are thankful for in our lives and community. There are many here, though, who have the spirit of gratitude and giving in their hearts every day of the year.

Piedmont looks forward

To the editor:  So much can change in a year. Piedmont University ended 2021 with a healthy surplus. Still, in the last year, we’ve seen graduate student enrollment decline significantly. This was largely the result of COVID-induced school closures.

Teach children right and wrong

It is no secret that the world our children are growing up in is different from that of their parents and grandparents. Most adults today have no idea what it’s like growing up with every teenager having a magical piece of glass in their pocket that can summon or create nearly limitless content.

Repent

To the editor: O that the peace of God was on our land, just like it used to be, where neighbors cared and lent a hand to help in time of need. If God’s people would turn back and repent, they can get it right by giving up their sins before the dark of night. The judgment hand of God is near.

Memories of events from long ago are still vivid for old guy

Someone asked me one time, “What is your earliest memory?” Well, if I’m remembering the memory correctly, it would be the time I had my photo taken with Smiley Burnette. I think I was four or five. I could be wrong, though, because I probably couldn’t count when I was four or five.

Some gave all, some still are

If you enjoyed the democratic election we had Tuesday, thank a veteran. Our brave men and women who have protected this country since its inception are the ones to whom we owe our freedom. But for many veterans, the fighting is not over, even after they come home.

Give us our rights

To the editor: I remember when we dared not get pregnant before ready to raise a family because abortions were illegal. Classmates were disgraced when overactive hormones led to pregnancy.

If I could bring you back again

To the editor: In loving memory of Larry La Prade: If my tears could build a bridge and my memories could build a lane, I’d walk right up to “Heaven’s Portals” and bring you back home again. I’d walk down that “Golden Stairway” so I could hold your hand again.
