Almost one year ago, my phone began to vibrate as the name Matthew Osborne flashed across the screen, calling to offer me a job as a reporter at The Northeast Georgian.

There is nothing like Friday Night Lights in Northeast Georgia. Tonight, our varsity Raider football team will line up on the gridiron to face off against the Stephens County Indians on their Reservation. And we all know the Raider Nation would rather beat Stephens County than eat when we’re hungry.

I lost my best friend

My husband, Matthew Osborne, is gone.    I still expect him to walk through the door, any door, or walk down the stairs. I’m waiting for something that according to facts — something I typically thrive on and don’t work against me in this manner — is not going to happen.

Time to save all the honey pots that we can

When the deluge hit Habersham County on Sunday night, all I could think of was The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.    “The rain, rain, rain came down, down, down …” and so forth. Folks around my age probably remember this children’s classic.

Sometimes there are no words

Sometimes there are no words to say. This is one of those times for our editorial team at The Northeast Georgian. Tuesday morning, our newspaper staff learned that Matthew Osborne, our editor, had died. He was a dedicated family man and professional who loved and was shown love.

Fourteen years later, the mystery remains

Without warning or explanation – in 2010 – the simple instruction was: “See that Dink NeSmith gets these.” And with that, the unidentified visitor exited the White County News in Cleveland, Georgia.

A lot of people say our politics are divided right now, and they are, but that revelation alone is not getting us any closer to a solution.    Do we need our public officials, including Congressmen, state legislators … all the way down to local officials to work together toward solutions?
