Lady Raiders look to keep rolling early

Habersham Central's softball team dropped a tough 9-8 contest to Stephens County after a wild eighth inning that saw nine runs scored. The Lady Indians plated five in the top of the frame, and the Lady Raiders (1-2) nearly matched it with four of their own before falling just short.

Nearly three decades ago, Habersham Central and Stephens County waged a defensive battle that 48 minutes could not even contain. On Sept. 10, 1993, Jerry Chapman’s then-school record 44-yard field goal sailed the uprights to give the Raiders a 6-3 overtime win over the Indians.

The quest for a third straight Sweet 16 has begun for the Lady Indians, who opened the season with a pair of wins over visiting Monroe Area and Stephens County on Tuesday evening. In the opening win over Monroe Area (25-12, 25-15), the Lady Indians raced out to a 9-1 lead.

Habersham Central's volleyball team improved to 3-0 with sweeps over Seckinger (25-14, 25-9) and Banks County (25-16, 25-17) on Thursday night.    The Lady Raider softball team got its first win of the year with a 5-3 decision at White County.

The 9th Battle of the Heroes, a fundraiser for the Easton Foundation, was held Saturday night at Raider Stadium. Hall County first responders defeated the combined forces of Habersham/Banks counties 29-18 thanks to a strong first half.
