The sounds of summer silence

Long days and short nights. With a chance of an isolated thunderstorm every afternoon and midday heat hot enough to bake cookies on your dashboard. It’s summertime in Northeast Georgia! As we fight to keep the grass cut and black spots off our hydrangeas, opportunities for fun abound.

Finding a swimming hole upgrade

When they were little, all strapped in neat and safe in car seats and booster seats and the front seat was my domain alone, I would pack the minivan with a whole cooler alongside the sand toys and beach towels.

President not getting job done

To the editor: I hope all the people who voted for this idiot they call a president are proud of him. I would like to know what he has done to make the U.S. better than it was in 2020. I can’t think of anything. He has screwed up everything that he has been involved in.

Let Brandon go

What does Let’s Go Brandon mean? The little kid asked me from the side of the road during the Fourth of July parade after a giant red plastic elephant passed by with those words on its side. Um, well ... If this kid would have asked me a couple months ago I could have honestly said I don’t know.

Want to lower your stress level? Find a friendly dog

A team of Japanese scientists has come up with a theory – maybe proof – of why dogs are man’s best friend. Woman’s, too. The researchers say it’s because of two mutations of a gene that made dogs more relaxed around people, “enabling a special relationship to develop.

Votes by the few decide for the many

“Trouble, oh we got trouble. Right here in River City,” according to the citizens in The Music Man. Rural Iowa isn’t the only place with trouble. Our elected officials, and our city and county staff bemoan the fact that voter turnout is on the decline.

Another summer treat

Whew! I don’t know about y’all but it seems like we’ve had a lot going on this summer. Nothing new just a thing called life. I’ve been seeing the blackberries in the vines above our driveway. Then the memories flood my mind of the carefree summer days of my childhood.
